This is a classic Chinese spice. Native to China and Vietnam, this star shaped spice has a distinct flavour much like Liquorice. It is widely used as a seasoning in Chinese and Southeast Asian cooking for its highly aromatic, pungent flavour. Only a small section is required in a dish which can be discarded before serving. Star Anise is one of the dominant spices in the well known ‘Chinese 5 Spice’ blend. Add a pod to your poaching liquid for chicken and seafood, excellent with braised meats, roasted duck or in traditional Vietnamese noodle soups. Combines well with Szechuan peppercorns. If a recipe calls for ground star anise, grind only what you need. Whole pods will remain fresh for at least 2 years when stored in a cool, dark place.
