This wonderful Sambal Oelek from the Dutch Lucullus brand is an ever-present in our spice cupboard, and we are now offering it in our range. Ingredients-wise it is one of the more basic sambals available – it does not include the dried shrimp/fish sauce used in many, and is thus suitable for vegans – consisting of little more than red chilli, salt and vinegar. We like to use it as a sauce, slapping a teaspoon or two on top of anything from a rice bowl to a fried egg sandwich, and it is a really good way to give a bit of oomph to a basic noodle soup. It can also be used as an ingredient, used to give a chilli umami kick to any dish, including Western ones. If you’re looking for a sambal which goes back to basics and can be enjoyed with any dish, this is highly recommended.
